Hot weather means keeping your pet cool.
Summer is a great time to get out with your companion animal. It’s good for you and your dog. Being diligent and thoughtful will make sure summer a magical time.
You wouldn’t keep your dog in a hot car, right? But would you run into the store leaving your dog in your car with the windows cracked, parked in the shade? A dog can overheat in a car with the windows cracked in 70° weather. Even in the shade. Since they don’t sweat, they need circulation and temperature to stay cool. In many states it is legal. for good Samaritans to break into your car if they think your dog is in distress. Think before you take your dog in the car and leave her.
If your dog likes to hang her head out the window, you might want to invest in some dog goggles. An added benefit is that they are adorable! If you run, skateboard, or bike with your pet, stop periodically to check on her welfare and to give her water. Also check how hot the pavement is. They can burn their pads. White and pale colored dogs and cats can get sunburn. When you put on your sunscreen, put some veterinary sunscreen on your pet, especially the ears and nose. Near water have your pet wear a lifejacket.
Summer months bring more encounters between dogs and people in the park, at backyard barbecues, and in the neighborhood. Teach your children to be cautious around strange dogs. Always ask the owner if the dog is safe to approach. Even owned dogs that you know can get overexcited by play and activities. Make sure you and your children know the signs of a dog who's had enough or is getting overwrought.
Although the 4th of July is over, thunder is another noise danger. Some dogs and cats are very afraid of thunder. Keep your frightened dog in the bathroom. Make a bed in the tub – porcelain doesn’t conduct sound. Just in case your companion gets lost, an easy ID is a piece of paper tape with a readable phone number on it attached to your pet’s collar.
Cats are not wild animals. They are pets. They are your responsibility. Build. a catio, catify your house, walk your cat on a leash.
